Call for Papers Special Leadership Issue

Studies of Changing Societies: Emerging Leadership Principles and Practices in an Era of Globalization

The discipline of leadership as a field of study has developed in Western countries over the past one hundred years. As a result, the primary exporter of leadership thought is considered to be the United States. This practice holds at least two implications: a) some leadership theories may not be relevant or practically applied in other cultures and b) leadership is not well understood in many other parts of the world, largely due to a lack of research and attention to the discipline. The Analytical Center for Leadership Research and Development (ACLRD), a leadership think tank based in Kiev, Ukraine, in partnership with the peer-reviewed journal, “Studies of Changing Societies,” announces a call for papers for a special issue: “ Studies of Changing Societies: Emerging Leadership Principles and Practices in an Era of Globalization.” For more information about the journal, Studies of Changing Societies, please see the following website:  https://www.degruyter.com/view/j/scs or http://www.ipsa.org/news/journal/studies-changing-societies

The primary focus of this special issue is on leadership theory and praxis as they relate to other cultures (especially non-Western) around the globe. The purpose of this special issue is to introduce and to inform leadership practitioners and academics in Eastern Europe about the field of leadership and the potential it holds for impacting cultures across various sectors of society. Scholars and practitioners are invited to contribute to this special issue in any of the following topics:

  1. How leadership practices vary from culture to culture

To what extent, if at all, might Western leadership theories be transferable into other cultures? How do non-Western cultures understand and practice leadership?

  1. Global leadership competencies

The topic of global leadership skills and competencies is apparent in leadership literature. As communications and technologies enable regions of the world to grow more closely together, and cross-cultural interactions become more frequent and common in business practice, understanding cross-cultural dynamics becomes a key component of success in global business. Submissions focused on this topic will help to illustrate the development of leaders in a global context.

  1. How technology and the global economy affect leadership practices

Leaders must deal with developments in the technological arena, as well as issues that result within the global economy. How might technology affect leadership praxis on a global scale? In what ways might the emergence of artificial intelligence influence leadership practices, especially with followers?

  1. Social sciences and leadership

Leadership is complex and multi-disciplinary, incorporating many different sub-disciplines (especially within the social sciences), such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, philosophy, culture, religion, etc. How might these fields inform the discipline of leadership? How might leadership development benefit from an examination of these different sub-disciplines? The papers submitted under this topic must show how the integration of a particular social science further enhances the understanding and praxis of leadership.

Each submission must be at least 6,000 words in length, adhering to APA style. This special issue will be published online in an open format; there is no specific deadline. However, once ten papers have been accepted and published, the issue will close and no further submissions will be accepted.
